At NZ International Department, we are proud to offer you a world-leading non-invasive tumor treatment technology—HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound).
The HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound), scientifically known as the “High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation System,” works on a principle that can be understood as follows: low-energy ultrasound waves from outside the body are precisely focused on the tumor inside. This creates instant high temperatures at the focal point, effectively “burning” the tumor cells to death, while causing almost no damage to the surrounding healthy tissue.
The entire process requires no surgery, leaves no wound, and involves no bleeding, hence it is known as the “invisible scalpel.”
What conditions is HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) suitable for?
Pancreatic Cancer
Particularly suitable for pancreatic head or body/tail cancers that are inoperable due to blood vessel involvement, or for patients who cannot tolerate radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
Liver Cancer
Including primary liver cancer and metastatic liver cancer.
Other Solid Tumors
Such as uterine fibroids, soft tissue tumors, etc.
What are the advantages of HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) compared to traditional treatments?
| Treatment Method | Core Characteristics | HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) Advantages |
| Traditional Surgery | Highly invasive, slow recovery | Non-invasive: No external incision, significantly reduces physical trauma and risk of post-operative complications. |
| Minimally Invasive Ablation | Requires puncture, still carries risk of injury | No Puncture: Avoids risks of bleeding, infection, or tumor seeding associated with puncture. |
| Interventional Therapy | Primarily targets tumor blood supply; limited direct ablation capability for solid tumors. | Direct Ablation: Precisely acts on the tumor tissue itself, resulting in more thorough ablation. |
| HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) | Non-invasive focused ablation | Fast Recovery: Patients can quickly resume normal activities after treatment. Accesses Previously Inaccessible Areas: Can treat complex tumors enveloping blood vessels. |
Currently, HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) technology has been widely used in the treatment of various solid tumors including uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, breast cancer, breast fibroadenoma, liver cancer, bone tumors, pancreatic cancer, and more, providing new treatment options for tens of thousands of patients.
A few months ago, Mr. Zhou began experiencing upper abdominal pain and loss of appetite, followed by noticeable yellowing of his skin and eyes. His weight dropped by 10 kilograms in a short period. These typical digestive and jaundice symptoms prompted him to seek immediate medical examination.
By the end of July 2025, examinations at Harbin Medical University confirmed his fears: blood tests indicated impaired liver function and biliary obstruction, and an enhanced CT scan further identified a “pancreatic head mass, suspected pancreatic cancer.” The patient subsequently underwent an ERCP with biliary stent placement to relieve the biliary blockage, which improved his jaundice symptoms.
Seeking further diagnosis and treatment, the patient went to a cancer hospital in Tianjin. Enhanced MRI results showed: the pancreatic head tumor involved major blood vessels including the main portal vein and the celiac trunk, accompanied by dilation of the pancreatic and bile ducts. This meant the tumor had invaded critical “vital pathways,” making direct surgical resection extremely difficult and risky. Subsequently, the patient underwent a pancreatic tumor biopsy and completed four cycles of chemotherapy.
However, after chemotherapy, the patient’s abdominal pain persisted, still requiring oral painkillers for control. In search of a more suitable treatment plan, he finally came to Beijing South Region Oncology Hospital.
Facing such a complex case involving a tumor enveloping blood vessels, biliary obstruction, and unresolved symptoms post-chemotherapy, the Hyperthermia/Haifu Department at Beijing South Region Oncology Hospital organized a multi-disciplinary evaluation and ultimately determined a treatment plan centered on the HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound).
This choice was based on the hospital’s solid accumulation of experience in this technology: as a specialized department that started HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) treatment relatively early in Northern China, the hospital has cumulatively performed over 2,000 Haifu ablation procedures, covering various solid tumors including pancreatic and liver cancers. They have developed a mature and safe treatment strategy for handling such complex pancreatic cancers that are inoperable due to vascular invasion.
For this specific patient, the medical team formulated a meticulous treatment plan. Using CT for precise localization, they targeted the 3.7cm x 3cm tumor in the pancreatic head while skillfully avoiding the enveloped important blood vessels. Real-time monitoring during the treatment ensured the energy precisely covered the tumor.
Immediate post-treatment CT scans showed effective coagulative necrosis had formed in the target tumor area, with significantly reduced activity. The patient reported marked relief in upper abdominal pain, no longer needing to rely on painkillers, and improvements in both energy and appetite.
We understand that choosing a hospital in a foreign country requires immense trust. At Beijing South Region Oncology Hospital International Department, we are committed to repaying that trust with top experts, advanced technologies like the HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound), and international service standards.
The Hyperthermia & HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) Department at Beijing South Region Oncology Hospital is dedicated to providing more diverse treatment options for cancer patients. The department is equipped with multiple hyperthermia devices of different frequencies, suitable for adjuvant therapy of various solid tumors (excluding the eyes and cranial cavity). Hyperthermia can be used synergistically with traditional methods like radiotherapy and chemotherapy, aiming to reduce discomfort from certain treatments and provide patients with personalized, gentler treatment strategies. Some hyperthermia items are covered by medical insurance.
The department also provides HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound)® non-invasive treatment. This technology uses focused ultrasound waves to act on the lesion area inside the body, requiring no surgery, helping to preserve organ structure and function, and supporting faster patient recovery.
